You are all set and excited to go to your baking class. Being a baker is one of your most dreamed of jobs, so enrolling in a baking class for the summer was an easy choice for you. It helps to keep you from being bored at home and let you make new friends.
When you get to the cake shop around the corner from your house, you see the assistant baker layering what seems like a lemon chiffon cake. You and the other students are allowed to watch the staff work as long as you don’t disturb them. You know for a start that his name is Donghae - he is a working student, goes to the same university you were going to, and is really cute. You’re both enrolled in the music course and you know he’s part of the dance club. He is popular with the ladies, seeing as he is friendly and a gentleman. You didn’t know that he worked at the café when you enrolled at the start of vacation. Donghae focuses on the cake so you decide to wait outside instead, but he looks up and sees you.
“You’re early as always,” Donghae says with a smile.
“I live near here. I like being one of the first to be in class.”
“I see.” He looks back to the cake and adds the icing. You walk over to the table he was at and set your things down quietly. One cake was done and waiting to be settled enough for display. As you thought, he is layering a lemon chiffon cake, but the one that was done was decorated with peaches.
“Did you bake these?” You ask, examining the peach chiffon cake a bit more. It was simple, but it was bound to give customers a sweet and tangy flavour to snack on for the summer season. Refreshing and tasty – just the way it’s supposed to be.
“Yes. The head baker had his day off the other day, so I worked on them since then. I wasn’t here yesterday so I left them in the fridge.” Donghae evens out the icing carefully around the edges of the first layer of the cake. “Can you finish this for me? I’m waiting for the last cake to finish baking. I just need the icing to be even all around the layers.”
“Sure.” You walk over and receive the ladle from him.
“Thank you. I’ll be back in about ten minutes.” He gives you another friendly smile and disappears into the main kitchen. You work on the cake, careful not to get any icing on the table. After making sure it’s all even and ready to be put on display, you look over in the bowl and see leftover icing. Deciding that Donghae wouldn’t notice if you take some, you get a teaspoon from your bag and dig into the icing. It’s just as you imagined it to be – sweet, fruity, fluffy, and it has the refreshing taste of fresh lemon. You smile to yourself, check for the assistant baker, and take another spoonful.
“Is it any good?” Donghae asks. You turn around and take the spoon from your mouth. You feel the blush creep onto your cheeks and nod once. Why did he have to be back in exactly five minutes? He said ten, right? You feel so embarrassed and you wish you could take your things and leave.
“Sorry. I was really curious if it will end up how I thought it would.”
“And?”
“And it’s really good. Chiffon cakes are light and fluffy and are meant to be paired with tea and such, so this icing complements that. It’s not too sweet and not too fruity, but the fresh lemon is still there, which is sort of the highlight of the dessert.”
Donghae taps his chin and looks at you approvingly. Hopefully you saved yourself from further interrogation.
“If the head baker heard that you’d graduate at the top of the class,” he finally says.
“Really?”
“Yes. Now, please step aside, I’ll bring in the last cake.”
You follow him and move. The last cake is bigger than the previous two that he baked. You smell fresh mangoes, vanilla, and a bit of cinnamon. Donghae sets it down on the table and steps back so you could both see well. It’s shaped into a heart, had some shavings of almonds at the top and the mangoes are all ripe and look delicious. The vanilla icing around the three layers has settled nicely, giving it a professional-looking finish. Lastly, the cinnamon sprinkled around it makes it all the more perfect. You know it’s not warm any more. In fact, it’s more than ready for display, it’s ready for eating.
“Do you like it?” Donghae asks quietly, his arms behind him, his eyes looking right at yours.
“I do. It’s so beautiful. If it were me I’d be afraid of eating it because it looks so perfect and made with so much effort.”
“What if it’s for you? You still won’t eat it?”
“I would, if the baker would want me to.”
Donghae smiles widely and places a card at the side of the cake. He steps back again and nods at you so you move closer to read the card.
For my pretty future baker friend, enjoy this one. I hope you love it. As I do.
P.S. Will you love me as well?
You know you’re as red as a ripe strawberry, but you control the urge to turn and hug Donghae. It is so sweet of him. You had no idea he’d be acting like this. You hear him clear his throat, obviously waiting for an answer. You turn to look at him and just smile at him.
“I think I want to disagree with the word pretty, Donghae,” you say with a laugh.
“I think you should not. It’s supposed to say beautiful, but I know you’re so much more than that.”
Donghae takes the spoon from your grip and holds your hand up to his cheek, leaning into it. His eyes close at the contact and sighs. You place your other hand on his arm as he places his free arm on your waist. When you’re closer than close, you reach up and kiss him lightly, smiling as you pull away.
“I want more than that, if you would.” Donghae says, his eyes still closed, his smile childish yet sweet. You pull him down with both hands and kiss him again, his arms going around your back to press your body against his.
What a sweet way to end your summer class.
